Richard Branson: 6 Bitcoin Customers Confirmed for Virgin Galactic Space Flight

Billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has revealed a handful of people have paid in bitcoin for their place on board the Virgin Galactic spaceship.

Back in November, Branson announced his commercial space flight venture Virgin Galactic was to accept payment in bitcoins and, just two months later, “six or seven” people have already paid for their tickets in the digital currency.

Earlier this month, Virgin Galactic took its SpaceShipTwo on its third test flight, with the craft reaching 71,000 feet – its highest yet.

SpaceShipTwo is a consumer-ready vehicle designed to fly to the edge of space. It is partly based on the technology of SpaceShipOne, the craft that completed the first manned private spaceflight in 2004.

Microsoft profit, revenue outpace estimates on Xbox and cloud strength

Microsoft investors have a reason to smile this afternoon, even though there’s no word yet on a replacement for current CEO Steve Ballmer.

In its latest earnings report, Microsoft reported a record second quarter profit of $6.56 billion (78 cents per share), up 2.8 percent from the same period last year. That far surpassed Wall Street expectations of 68 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters data. Total revenues rose 14 percent to $24.5 billion, which also topped analyst expectations.

Even though revenue growth far outpaced earnings growth, those are positive numbers for Microsoft, which has spent the past five months searching for a new CEO. Microsoft is making major transitions as it implements a company-wide reorganization and works to complete its acquisition of Nokia.

Take a look at this article from Venture Beat to learn more about Mircosoft’s revenue paths in 2014.

Australian Bus Commuters Can Soon Pay Fares With Bitcoin

A team of mobile developers in Canberra, Australia, is aiming to be the first in the world to allow public transit users to pay for rides in bitcoin via its MyBus 2.0 app.

MyBus 2.0 is a timetable and route-planner app on Canberra’s extensive bus network ACTION, which is also the city’s primary public transit system. Developers Imagine Team Solutions announced the app now has more than 50,000 active users.

To celebrate that milestone, it turned its attention to ACTION’s prepaid fare smartcard system, MyWay. MyWay automatically deducts the correct fare when a passenger touches the card against a reader upon entering and exiting the bus
